SAGINAW, MI – The Saginaw medical community and residents are in mourning following the tragic loss of Dr. Shawn M. Ingles, a renowned gastroenterologist who passed away in an automobile accident on November 17, 20231. Dr. Ingles, known for his exceptional medical expertise and compassionate care, was on his way to the hospital to care for patients when the accident occurred2.
Born in Pontiac, Michigan, Dr. Ingles’s journey to becoming a doctor began with his graduation from Walled Lake Central High School in 1990. He pursued his dream at Michigan State University, where he received his undergraduate degree, followed by a degree from Michigan State University – College of Osteopathic Medicine in 19991. His residency and fellowship at Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc further honed his skills, leading him to serve the Saginaw and Bay City areas with distinction2.
Dr. Ingles’s career at Ascension Medical Group Valley Gastroenterology was marked by his dedication to improving the health of his community. Christine Bergman, marketing communications manager for Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital, expressed the collective heartbreak, “Dr. Ingles was a highly-respected and kind-hearted physician. He was dedicated to providing his patients exceptional care, and improving the health of our communities. Our prayers are with his family, friends, fellow associates, and medical staff during this difficult time”2.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Ingles was an avid outdoorsman, earning the title of “Expert Canadian Fisherman” and creating cherished memories with his family and friends1. His love for adventure was paralleled only by his love for his family, including his wife, Erica K. Ingles, six children, and four grandchildren, who are left to cherish his memory1.
A Celebration of Life was held on November 27, 2023, at The Snow Funeral Home in Saginaw, where family, friends, and colleagues gathered to honor a man who wore many hats – a physician, a family man, and an adventurer1. Dr. Ingles’s legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched, both in and out of the hospital.
Dr. Shawn M. Ingles, a true hero in every sense of the word, will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to his patients, his family, and his community. His departure leaves a void that will be felt deeply by all who knew him.
